Canon 77D Advantages:
- Sensor – The 77D sports a newer sensor with 4 more megapixels, improved dynamic range and image quality.
- Built-in Video Stabilization – You get a 5 axis electronic stabilization that works only in video mode. Huge advantage for shooting with lenses that don’t have IS, and even with those that do have it!
- 1 stop higher maximum ISO – The noise performance has improved too, but it’s definitely not usable over 12,800.
- 45 vs 19 AF Points – Much more freedom over where you want to focus.
- 45 cross-type points – Cross-type points are more accurate than regular ones, and this type was usually reserved for more expensive models. The 77D actually borrows the AF system from the more expensive 80D.
- Full HD at 60fps – For slow motion clips or smoother look, 60fps gives you more to work with.
- Bigger Buffer – Unlimited JPEG buffer versus 65. Both are more than what most of you will need anyways. RAW buffer on the other hand, is twice as big and deifnitely good news for sports/wildlife shooters.
- Time Lapse
- Bluetooth & NFC – You can now send your shots using Bluetooth and NFC
- Weight & Size – The Canon 77D is smaller and over 200g lighter.
The new Canon EOS 77D is definitely an attractive choice, with the excellent 24MP sensor and 45 AF points. Video wise, the articulating screen, stabilization and Full HD at 60fps definitely make it an awesome choice.
These two cameras also cost the same, so let’s see what you get by going with the 70D.

Canon EOS 70D Advantages:
- 7 vs 6fps – Not a big difference but an advantage nonetheless
- Viewfinder – Its coverage is 98% compared to 95%, and the magnification is bigger too. This doesn’t affect your photographs, but does make your life easier if you can’t see too good.
- Faster Max Shutter Speed – 1/8000 vs 1/4000. When shooting on a bright day with big apertures (f/1.8, f/1.4), 1/4000 is not always fast enough to get a good exposure. This is rarely an issue for most photographers, but it’s still an advantage.
- Faster Flash Sync Speed – 1/250 vs /200
- Environmentally Sealed – More protected against water, snow etc.
- Battery Life – 320 shots more with a single charge.
The 70D’s biggest advantage is the environmental sealing and a longer battery life. Both make it more appropriate for mainly nature purposes where you want to be as secure as possible. Canon’s Rebel will do fine in such weather too, but the 70D just gives you that extra level of protection.
