Canon 80D Advantages:

  • Higher ISO Range – The native ISO is 1 and a half stop higher
  • AF System – The Canon 80D has 45 vs 51 AF points, but all 45 are cross-type compared to only 15 on the D7100. It’ll focus better in low light and other difficult situations
  • 7 vs 6fps – An advantage when shooting sports and wildlife as you get 2 extra shots every second
  • LCD Screen – It’s fully articulated vs the fixed one on the D7100
  • Touchscreen – You can tap the LCD screen on the 80D and select your focus point, as well as navigate through the menus
  • Dual Pixel AF – The 80D has DPAF technology, which makes auto focusing for videos much more usable
  • Buffer – Big difference here, 53 vs 12 JPEGs, 24 vs 5 RAW files
  • Built-in Connections – The 80D has Wi-Fi and NFC

What will you appreciate the most from the newer Canon 80D? Definitely the articulating LCD screen, touchscreen, DPAF for videos, a way bigger buffer and built-in Wi-Fi. In terms of image quality these two cameras are very similar, so if you find the 80D’s advantages to be worth it then by all means get it.

Nikon D7100 Advantages:

  • AA Filter – The D7100 has no AA filter which should result in slightly sharper images when printing big
  • LCD Size– 3.2″ vs 3.0″ with higher resolution
  • Viewfinder – 100% coverage
  • Dual Memory Cards – You can use 2 x SD cards which is great for having a backup card or simply using one to record videos
  • Less Expensive – Body only, the D7100 costs around $400 less than the 80D body

The D7100 is older but still quite impressive. 24MP, no AA filter, 6fps, good 51 AF point system and 2 memory card slots. The Raw and JPEG buffer size is a little bit disappointing, but other than that the D7100 is a camera made for action and traveling.
