Let’s check out how the Canon T7i compares to the Nikon D3400. Both cameras are new and aimed at people looking for a small, lightweight DSLR packed with tons of good features.
Our comparison table below covers the important specifications of each camera. Below that, we specifically talk about the new improvements and which model is better suited for your needs.

Canon T7i Advantages:
- Body Stabilization – When recording videos, the built-in 5-axis stabilization helps you get less shaky footage. Unfortunately this does not work for photographs.
- Higher Max ISO – Expanded ISO is 1 stop higher. Noise performance should look the same on both cameras, but in extreme situations it helps knowing you can go this high.
- 45 AF System – Not only does the T7i feature a lot more AF points, it has all of them cross-type compared to just one on the D3400.
- 6 vs 5fps – Not a big difference, but if you’re often photographing action then every extra frame helps. We consider 5 to be the minimum for serious wildlife/sports, so both cameras will do good here.
- LCD Screen – The screen is fully articulated so you can use it for recording yourself or taking pictures of subjects that are out of your view. It’s also slightly sharper.
- Touchscreen – This allows you to both navigate through the menus and directly select your desired focus point on the LCD screen (good for photos, even better for videos)
- Microphone Jack – You can plug in an external microphone. Great if audio quality is important to you!
- Bigger buffer – Unlimited JPEG buffer compared to 100 shots, but even 100 is more than what 99% photographers need. It’s the RAW buffer where the T7i wins a lot because 12 shots at 5fps means you’ll fill the buffer a little bit over 2 seconds.
- Connectivity – The T7i has built-in Wi-Fi and NFC, whereas the D3400 only offers Bluetooth.
The Canon T7i beats the D3400 almost everywhere but that’s also the reason why it costs more. Still, we find it worth the money and if your budget allows you, the Canon T7i is an excellent serious entry-level DSLR that’ll do good for even more serious action photography (animals, sports). The 45-AF point system borrowed from the 80D is an incredible step up from the previous 19 points on the T6i.
Canon’s Dual Pixel AF, the LCD screen and a microphone jack also make it more useful for serious videographers.

Nikon D3400 Advantages:
- Battery Life – 600 shots longer. However, this is partially because Nikon reduced the flash power from its D3300 (800 shots battery life) so it’s not a completely fair comparison. Still, it’ll last much longer.
- Weight & Size – The D3400’s body is incredibly light and just a tad smaller than the T7i.
- Less Expensive – With the kit lens, the D3400 goes for around $400 less
The D3400 offers Full HD at 60fps, longer battery life and costs considerably less. It’s a very good choice for both new comers to photography, as well as those looking to get the most in such an affordable camera. It doesn’t look that exciting compared to the T7i, but it’s actually our favorite DSLR for the money.
