Canon has announced an improved version of their most popular lens; a 50mm f/1.8 STM that’s just as affordable as its predecessor.
It’s still super light and compact (159g/5.6oz), and beats the previous version in all aspects. It’s got 0.21x magnification compared to 0.15x, closest focusing distance of 0.35m compared to 0.45m, and 2 more diaphragm blades (7 vs 5).
Focus wise, the STM is excellent for quiet and accurate auto focusing, making it perfect for video as well. The old 50mm f/1.8 was one of the loudest lenses available, sounding as if something was trapped inside of it. We’ll have to see about accuracy, but I’m sure Canon has improved it in that department as well. Just like with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, the lens features Full-Time Manual Focus, allowing you to focus manually even if you’re in the AF mode (great for situations where the light often changes).
