Best Canon M5 Accessories

Looking for the best Canon M5 accessories? The ones we recommend are perfect if you’re looking to either improve the quality of your images, or for accessories that will make your photography career easier (like an extra battery, or a tripod for stability).

We’ve only selected accessories from reputable brands, and made sure they’re compatible with the Canon M5 (some work on almost all Canon DSLRs) and aren’t overpriced. At the bottom of each accessory, we also link to a slightly cheaper (sometimes third-party) item.

You don’t need to buy everything when you’re just starting out, but as you grow and learn, it helps to have items that will allow you to get even better shots!

1.  Battery

canon-lp-e6n-battery

Canon LP-E17 Battery – The Canon M5 uses the same LP-E17 battery like a lot of other Canon DSLRs. A spare battery is a must accessory, as shooting with just one can be dangerous, especially if you’re shooting something important, or really unique. If that one battery gets empty or displays an error, you’re done. For traveling, this is also a big time saver as you don’t have to wait for ~2 hours for the battery to charge.

  • Non-Canon batteries are usually low quality and can damage your camera
  • If you record videos or shoot weddings, concerts, an extra battery is a must
  • You can get up to 300 shots on a single charge

You can buy it on Amazon.

2.  Flash Speedlite

neewer-tt560-flash-speedlite

Neewer TT560 Flash – Works perfectly on all Canon DSLR cameras (Nikon as well), comes with a built-in bounce card and a diffuser, and is easy and simple to use regardless of your skills. Number one selling flash on Amazon because of its low price and good results.

  • Works perfectly on Canon and Nikon DSLRs
  • Vertical Rotation: 0-90 degrees | Horizontal Rotation: 0-270 degrees
  • Guide Number 38 (at ISO 100)
  • Features 8 steps of power levels (from 1/128 to 1/1)
  • Slave mode so you can use it with other flash units

You can buy it on Amazon.

3.  Memory Card

SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro UHS-I (95MB/s) – SanDisk is number one when it comes to memory cards brands, and this one is fast enough so you can take pictures in burst mode without waiting for the card to write the files. This is really important when you can’t afford to miss a shot due to the fact your card is slow at writing shots/videos (weddings and fireworks for example). An extra memory card is the cheapest accessory you can buy, but is often the most important especially if you lots of long shootings.

  • Read up to 90MB/s + Write up to 95MB/s
  • It’s waterproof, shockproof and x-ray proof as well
  • Full HD video or 7fps on the M5 are no challenge for this card

You can buy it on Amazon.

Also: SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro (95MB/s)

5.  Tripod

tripod-accessory

Dolica AX620 62″ Tripod and Ball Head – Hands down the best tripod for any DSLR under $100 (this one costs $50). It’s great for studio, landscapes, architecture etc. Since the Canon M5 is so light, you don’t have to worry about buying super expensive tripods since this one can handle it easily (even with telephoto lenses).

  • Supports a maximum weight of 13.2lbs (Canon M5 body with a battery weighs 0.9 lbs)
  • Weighs 2.5 lbs and is 22.5 inches tall (when fully collapsed)
  • 62 inches maximum height
  • Ball head plate and a bubble level

You can buy it on Amazon.

6.  Disc Light Reflectors

neewer-5-in-1-reflector

Neewer 5-in-1 (43″) Collapsible Light Reflector – Light is the most important factor for any photograph, and the more you can control/affect it, the more chances you have of truly getting professional shots. Sometimes that’s by using an external flash, and sometimes that’s by simply reflecting the available light (or with a flash) to specific areas of your subject. The 5D’s full frame sensor is perfect for portraits, and a light reflector is always a welcome accessory on the set.

  • 5 light reflectors in 1 (43 inches diameter when opened)
  • Gold, black, silver, white and translucent, 5 most popular colors
  • Perfect for both studio and outdoor photography, easy to carry
  • This is the cheapest but most effective way to really make your shots look better (I also recommend the flash above)

You can buy it on Amazon.

7.  Shutter Remote Control

pixel-remote-control

Pixel N3 Wireless Shutter Remote – If you’re into night photography, fireworks, stop motion or any type of photography where you use longer shutter speeds and can’t have your finger constantly on the shutter button, an accessory such as a remote control really makes your life easier and allows you to be more precise with long exposures (there’s also no shake from you pressing the shutter button on the camera itself).

  • Works with the Canon M5 and almost all cameras on the market
  • Also features a delay shooting function for group shots
  • Uses 2 x AAA batteries and works for 400 hours.

You can buy it on Amazon.
