Nikon D3400 Advantages:

  • Megapixels – 8 more megapixels. For printing big and cropping, the Nikon D3400 is a much better choice.
  • Sensor Format – APS-C is bigger than MFT, which results in slightly less noise at higher ISO levels.
  • AA Filter – The Nikon D3400 has no AA filter.
  • Battery Life – 1200 shots vs 530 shots.
  • Bluetooth Support
  • Less Expensive – The D3400 costs around $600 less

The Nikon D3400 is an entry-level DSLR with a 24MP sensor, longer battery life and a much lower price tag. It’s an excellent all-around camera if you want something cheap for both photos and videos, but it obviously doesn’t offer as many features for video as the GH4.

Panasonic GH4 Advantages:

  • 49 vs 11 – 38 more AF points. Both will be pretty similar in speed, but the D3400 will be faster in low light due to having phase detection points.
  • Continuous mode – 12fps vs 5fps – More is better for sports and wildlife since you have more chances of getting a tack sharp shot.
  • LCD – It is fully articulated.
  • LCD Resolution – Higher resolution.
  • Touchscreen Support
  • Focus Peaking – Very useful for seeing if your subject is in focus (both photo and video).
  • Viewfinder Coverage – 100% vs 95%.
  • Viewfinder Magnification – Higher magnification.
  • Video Resolution – 4K video available.
  • Microphone Jack – If you’re going to record videos where audio quality is important, a microphone jack is super helpful.
  • Headphone Jack – Useful for previewing your audio quality straight out the camera
  • Faster Max Shutter Speed – 1/8000 vs 1/4000.
  • JPEG Buffer Size – Unlimited vs 100. Useful for long bursts.
  • RAW Buffer Size – 21 vs 12.
  • Time-Lapse
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • Max Flash Sync Speed – 1/250 vs 1/200.
  • Environmentally Sealed – The Panasonic GH4 is much more protected for shooting outdoors in difficult terrain and bad weather conditions.

Despite being older, the Panasonic is an impressive video camera that blows most other cameras out the water. It’s cheap (for such a feature-rich 4K video camera), compact and delivers excellent 4K results (as well as Full HD). If video is more important than photography to you, but you still want to take pictures, you’ll love it!
