Best Memory Cards for Pentax K-70

The Pentax K-70 has 1 x SD memory card slot, here are our best memory cards for it.

It supports UHS-I speeds, so if you often shoot sports or just want a fast card, it’s worth getting one with UHS-I since they’re not expensive.

Our favorite memory card is the SanDisk Extreme PRO 64GB. It’s super fast (95MB/s) and affordable, plus SanDisk is the most reliable memory card company out there.

After looking through many memory cards available, these are the top 2 (best price/speed ratio).

Best Memory Cards for Pentax K-70

SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB

Our top pick: For the price, nothing beats the SanDisk PRO 64GB (95MB/s). It’s our most recommended card for almost all cameras, simply because it’s UHS-I U3 at 95MB/s and extremely reliable.

For the Pentax K-70 it’s more than enough since the camera can shoot 6fps and records Full HD videos. This is a piece of cake for the SanDisk card.

You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.

Lexar Professional 1000x UHS-II

lexar-professional-64gb-1000x-u3The Lexar Professional 1000x 64GB is a UHS-II U3 card so while you won’t see any improved writing speeds in the camera itself, you will be able to transfer your shots to your computer much quicker.

No Pentax DSLR currently can take advantage of the faster UHS-II speeds. They will work normally, but top out at UHS-I speed, which is luckily fast enough for most uses anyways. For example, UHS-I cards are totally fine for even 4K videos and faster cameras than the K-70.

You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.

Don’t buy memory cards from unknown brands or something that looks too good to be true. More often than not, those cards will fail right when you’ll need them the most.

A memory card is where all of your work is stored until you transfer that on the computer.

Make sure to get a card from any of the following brands: SanDisk, Lexar, Transcend and Kingston. There are a few good out there, but the 5 we mentioned are more than enough.

  • You recommend 64GB cards for the Pentax K70, but I have seen others racomend 128GB cards; can you advise which is best please?

    • Thanks for the question Mike. To individualize the answer it depends a bit on your needs and use, although in general 64GB is what I would say for most people.

To put it in context, 64GB = about 2184 raw photos or 9400 jpg photos. 128GB would of course be double that.

For most 64GB is sufficient for shooting for a long time.

      Now some of the exceptions:
      – If you are a professional taking a bunch of shots all in one session
      – If you do a lot of video

Of course in these situations having a bigger capacity is better.

However, as the saying goes, two is better than one. So we think having two 64GB is better than having one 128GB, or two 34GB is better than one 64GB.

The reason we suggest this is two fold; cost and backup.

Often the lower capacity card will be less expensive than the higher ones, which carry a premium cost.

Then secondly, cards do go bad.

Also if you are having to take a card out to transfer it to a computer or you’re out shooting and run out of room having a backup card that is fresh is nice rather than having to hurry and try to delete old photos.

Having a sufficiently large card for your use also encourages you to ‘Spring Clean’ every once in a while. If you have a card that has endless amounts of space then we tend to just let it fill up with clutter.

So to sum it up, if budget isn’t really a concern then spring for the largest card, but we would suggest that you plan on getting two cards rather than one. If you have limited funds then 64GB is usually plenty for most photographers.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.
