Canon SL1 Advantages:

  • Buffer – Unlimited vs 15 JPEG buffer and 8 vs 6 for RAW
  • Size & Weight – The Canon SL1 is Canon’s lightest and smallest DSLR. It weighs 120g less than the T5i and is more compact
  • Less Expensive – The SL1 with the kit 18-55mm lens costs around $120 less

For a lower price (that difference could get you the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM which is highly recommended), the SL1 is definitely an excellent choice. It’s smaller, lighter, has a bigger buffer.

Canon T5i Advantages:

  • Cross-Type AF – The T5i has all 9 points cross-type so it will be more accurate in low light conditions
  • 5 vs 4fps – Only 1fps, but under ~10fps every extra 1fps makes a noticeable difference
  • LCD Display – It’s fully articulated while the SL1’s screen is fixed
  • Battery Life – 60 shots longer battery life

The T5i’s advantages are pretty nice, especially the articulated LCD screen and better AF system. The SL1 is far from bad though, but the T5i can just go that little bit further. Other than that, it’s up to you to decide if paying more is worth it.
