Canon 80D Advantages:
- AF System – The Canon 80D has 34 more AF points and they’re all cross-type, compared to only 1 on the D3400. It’ll focus faster and quicker in difficult situations.
- LCD Screen – It’s fully articulated, whereas the D3400’s screen is fixed. The resolution is also slightly higher
- Touchscreen – You can tap the LCD screen to select your focus point for both photography and video.
- Top LCD Display – You can quickly preview all of your settings, as well as battery life, focusing mode etc. Helps a lot when shooting in manual modes
- Viewfinder – 98% vs 95% coverage and bigger magnification
- Microphone Jack – The 80D has a built-in microphone jack if you want better audio quality (almost a must if you want to include people talking)
- Headphone Jack – Helps if you want to monitor the audio quality
- Faster Max Shutter Speed – 1/8000 vs 1/4000
- RAW Buffer – 24 vs 7 makes a big difference
- Time-Lapse
- Flash Sync Speed – 1/250 vs 1/200
- Connections – The 80D has built-in Wi-Fi and NFC
- Environmentally Sealed – The 80D’s body is much more protected for shooting in the rain/snow/bad conditions
The Canon 80D is considered a mid-range DSLR which is why the specifications are better. What you’ll mostly appreciate is the 45 AF point system which is just wonderful to work with, an articulating and a top LCD screen that support touchscreen, Dual Pixel AF technology which makes auto focusing for videos much more usable, bigger RAW buffer and environmental sealing.

Nikon D3400 Advantages:
- AA Filter – The D3400 has no AA filter which should result in slightly sharper images when printing big
- JPEG Buffer – 100 vs 53
- Built-in Bluetooth
- Battery Life – 240 shots longer battery life
- Size & Weight – 330g lighter and noticeably smaller
- Less Expensive – The D3400 with the kit lens costs around $600 less than the 80D body only
The Nikon D3400 is an excellent camera for the money and is in fact our most recommended DSLR for those on a budget. The 24MP sensor is great, same for the image quality and high ISO performance, the battery life is really long and it’s relatively fast with 5fps and 100 shot JPEG buffer. Both cameras will allow you to take great pictures, it just depends on what you need and how much you’re willing to spend.
