Canon 80D Advantages:

  • LCD Screen – It’s fully articulated, whereas the Canon 5D IV’s screen is fixed
  • RAW Buffer – 24 vs 19
  • Built-in Flash
  • Flash Sync Speed – 1/250 vs 1/200
  • Battery Life – 60 shots longer. Very small difference in the field since these are studio tests
  • Weight & Size – The 80D weighs 160g less and is slightly smaller
  • Less Expensive – Body only, the Canon 80D costs around $2400 less

There’s a big price difference between these two cameras, and unless you really need what the 5D IV offers then the 80D is an excellent choice. It has an APS-C sensor with 24MP, 45 AF points, an articulating LCD screen and is far from heavy. It’s currently the best Canon DSLR for the money and it’s fantastic for both amateur and professional users.

Canon 5D IV Advantages:

  • Megapixels – 6 more megapixels
  • Sensor – Full frame vs APS-C. It’s bigger so you can expect slightly less noise when shooting at high ISO speeds
  • Higher ISO Range – The Canon 5D IV goes all the way to 102,400, 2 stops more than the 80D
  • AF System – It’s got 61 AF points, 41 of those are cross-type (4 less than on the 80D). More points means more freedom for you to frame your shot
  • LCD Size – 3.2″ vs 3.0″ and much much higher resolution
  • Viewfinder – 100% coverage
  • 4K Video – The Canon 5D IV can record 4K videos but with 1.74x crop factor
  • Dual Memory Cards – You can use SD and CF cards at the same time
  • JPEG Buffer – Unlimited vs 53 JPEG’s
  • Built-in GPS
  • USB 3.0 vs 2.0 – Faster file transferring out of the camera

Why does the 5D IV cost so much more? Because of the bigger, full frame sensor and higher ISO range. The AF system is borrowed from the 5D III with slight improvements, it shoots 7fps, has 4K video, a big 3.2″ LCD screen, 2 memory card slots and plenty of resolution for pretty much anything.
