Canon 77D Advantages:

  • Body Stabilization – The 77D has built-in 5-axis electronic video stabilization. Makes your videos less shaky, but does not work for photographs
  • Higher Max ISO – The native ISO is 2 stops higher, and the expanded goes 1 stop higher too. Noise performance is better too.
  • Cross-Type – The 77D has 45 cross-type points compared to 15 on the D7100. These are much more accurate at focusing in dark situations
  • Touchscreen – You can select the focus point directly on your LCD, which is great for video and photography. You can also navigate through the menus or zoom in/out of your pictures.
  • Bigger buffer – The Canon 77D sweeps the D7100 here. Unlimited JPEG versus only 12, and 27 RAW versus 5. This means you can shoot at 6fps for a longer time
  • Connectivity – The camera has built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth for sending your files
  • Weight & Size – Around 250g lighter and slightly smaller

For almost the same price, the Canon 77D gets you a better AF system, touchscreen, better video focusing and video stabilization, as well as a much larger buffer for RAW and JPEG continuous shooting.

If you’re not too keen on memory card readers, then the built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth are definitely a big plus too.

Nikon D7100 Advantages:

  • AF System – 6 more AF points. However, it has much less cross-type points!
  • LCD Screen – The screen is slightly bigger and has a higher resolution
  • 100% Coverage – Looking through the viewfinder, everything you see is what you’ll get on the shot. The 77D has a 95% coverage which is common for cheaper cameras.
  • Headphone Jack – Plug your headphones directly into the camera so you can monitor audio
  • Dual SD Slot – The D7100 offers two SD memory card slots
  • Faster Max Shutter Speed – 1/8000 vs 1/4000
  • Faster Flash Sync Speed – 1/250 vs 1/200
  • Environmentally Sealed – More protected for shooting in rain/snow/etc.
  • Battery Life – 350 shots longer with a single charge
  • Less Expensive – Costs around $50 less

The D7100’s most advantages are around its body; it’s bigger, more stable and environmentally sealed. The longer battery life and dual SD slots also make it more useful for long trips where taking thousands of pictures is nothing unusual.
