Canon 77D Advantages:
- Megapixels – The 77D has 4 more megapixels. The only benefit of this is if you often crop or print big. Pixels do not affect the overall quality!
- Body Stabilization – The 77D has built-in 5-axis electronic video stabilization. Makes your videos less shaky, but does not work for photographs
- Fully Articulated – Whereas the D500’s only tilts, the 77D’s screen is fully articulated
- Built-in Flash
- Weight & Size – The 77D is 300g lighter and quite a lot smaller
- Less Expensive -The price of 77D’s body is $1250 lower
This is no surprise. We’re comparing a camera that costs almost 3x more, so it’s understandable that it beats it in every department. Pay less, get less.
With that in mind, the 77D is still an excellent Rebel and great if you’re looking for an affordable camera to start with. For videos, the stabilization and Canon’s superior video focusing are two big advantages.

Nikon D500 Advantages:
- AA Filter – The D500 has no AA filter and therefore offers slightly better sharpness
- Higher ISO – Both native and expanded ISO are way higher, not to mention the D500 can go down to ISO 50
- AF System -This is where the D500 shines. It’s got almost 4 times as many AF points
- Cross-Type AF – Out of those 153 points, 99 are cross-type compared to 45 on the 77D.
- 10 vs 6fps – 4fps faster so you can get even more shots when photographing fast paced action
- LCD Screen – 3.2″ vs 3.0″ with much higher resolution
- 100% Coverage – The D500 has a 100% viewfinder coverage with 1.00x magnification. Doesn’t get better than this
- 4K Video – The D500 has 4K video recording at 30, 25 or 24p
- Headphone Jack – You can use headphones to monitor audio
- Dual SD Slot – The D500 offers two memory card slots, 1 x SD and 1 x XQD. XQD cards are currently much faster
- UHS-II – UHS-II SD cards have faster minimum writing speeds than UHS-I
- Faster Max Shutter Speed – 1/8000 vs 1/4000
- Buffer – For both JPEG and RAW, the D500 can shoot up to 200 files before stopping. You’ll need a good XQD card for this though
- Faster Flash Sync Speed – 1/250 vs 1/200
- Startup Time – No results from the 77D yet, but the D500 should turn on almost twice as fast
- USB 3.0 – Faster file transferring compared to USB 2.0

The Nikon D500 eats the 77D for breakfast, but it costs a lot more. What’s most impressive about it is by no doubt the 153 point AF system, great 20MP sensor, 10fps, 4K video, a sharp 3.2″ LCD Screen, XQD memory card support and a tremendously long battery life.
If you have the budget and want to shoot wildlife/sports/action, the D500 is worth it.
