Canon 5D Mark IV Advantages:

  • 7 vs 5fps – Makes a difference when shooting sports and wildlife
  • LCD Size – 3.2″ vs 3.0″ and much higher resolution
  • Touchscreen – The 5D IV allows you to tap the screen to select a focus point, as well as navigate through the menus etc.
  • Top LCD Screen – Very useful for quickly checking out all of your settings, battery info etc.
  • Dual Memory Cards – You can use SD + CF cards
  • JPEG Buffer – Unlimited vs 23
  • Startup Time – The 5D IV turns on 3x faster
  • Built-in GPS
  • USB 3.0 vs 2.0 – Faster file transferring out of the camera
  • Battery Life – 560 shots longer battery life

The Canon 5D IV is more expensive because it’s more of an all-around DSLR, high resolution, relatively fast burst and good video features. It’s also more expensive because Canon can do that, whereas Sony has to be a little bit more competitive. Plus, it’s the 5Ds R that’s actually competing with the high megapixel A7R II. If you find the advantages such as 7fps, touchscreen and dual memory cards important, and you want to use Canon lenses without any adapters, the 5D IV will be great.

Sony A7R II Advantages:

  • Sensor – 12 more megapixels. A lot of more resolution is excellent for extremely large prints or cropping out details
  • AA Filter – The A7R II has no AA filter which should result in slightly sharp images
  • Body Stabilization – The A7R II has built-in 5-axis stabilization that works for photographs and videos
  • AF System – The A7R II has 399 AF points. You’ve got more place to focus on, but even the 5D IV is far from bad, in fact, it’ll perform better in low light situations due to its cross-type AF points
  • LCD Screen – It’s fully articulated compared to the fixed one, so it’s better for shooting in awkward positions
  • Focus Peaking – The Sony A7R II can highlight what’s in focus! Excellent when focusing manually, whether it’s video or photography
  • Full HD – 120p instead of 60p, much better for clear, smooth slow motion clips
  • RAW Buffer – 23 vs 19
  • Flash Sync Speed – 1/250 vs 1/200
  • Built-in Flash
  • Weight & Size – The A7R II weighs almost 250g less and is a lot smaller
  • Less Expensive – Body only, the A7R II costs around $600 less

The Sony AR II is your lightest and most compact full frame mirrorless camera, and for now truly one of a kind. 4K video, 42 megapixels, 399 AF points, body stabilization and no AA filter for under $3000 results in a great combo.
