Canon 5D Mark IV Advantages:

  • Sensor – 8 more megapixels, improved low light performance
  • High ISO – Half stop higher native ISO, same maximum expanded ISO
  • AF System – They both use the same 61-point AF system, but the points on 5D IV are spread wider
  • 7 vs 6fps – Despite the increase in resolution, the 5D IV can shoot even faster
  • LCD Screen – Same size, but noticeably higher resolution
  • Touchscreen – Excellent for selecting the AF point on the LCD screen, navigating through the menus and photographs
  • 4K Video – 4096×2160 at 30/25/24p
  • Dual Pixel AF – The 5D IV sports much better video focusing (as well as in live view) thanks to the DPAF
  • UHS-I – The 5D III didn’t support UHS-I writing speeds available, the 5D IV does. Both work with CF UDMA7
  • Buffer – Unlimited JPEG buffer versus 63, nearly identical RAW buffers. Over 63 is higher than most will ever go though
  • Time-Lapse
  • Connections – The Canon 5D IV has built-in WI-Fi, GPS and NFC. The 5D III has none of that
  • USB 3.0 vs 2.0 – Faster file transferring
  • Weight & Size – The Canon 5D IV is slightly smaller and 60g lighter

Four years after the release of the 5D III, this is the result.

The biggest improvements are the 8MP increase in resolution without sacrificing high ISO quality, 4K video recording with DPAF, touchscreen, 7fps and all the built-in connections. If you already own the 5D III and don’t find the improvements to be worth it, there’s absolutely no need to upgrade yet. However, if you’re looking to upgrade from some other model and find the advantages a must for your work, then the new 5D IV will be good.

Canon 5D Mark III Advantages:

  • Battery Life – 50 shots longer battery life
  • Less Expensive – Body only, the 5D III costs around $1000 less

It would be weird if the 5D III was better in more categories, but the $1000 difference in price definitely plays a big role. It can make a difference between buying 1-3 lenses depending on your needs, and if you’re only starting out in photography with a limited budget, getting the 5D III might be a smarter investment. This all depends on your work and whether you find the 5D IV to be worth an extra $1000 more.
